Things really started going to hell in a hand basket during the Johnson administration in 1964.

My son used to live in New York City and he had to pay federal, state, county, and city income taxes which added up to 53% of his pay. Tell me that if you don't even get 50% of what you make it is anywhere close to fair.

I agree with your premise that taxes of 50% are not fair.  Having said that, I would tell you that we are at historically low tax rates.  In the 60's, earned income was taxed at 50% and investment income was taxed at 70%.  During Vietnam, the rate increased to 77%.  Remember WW2.  The maximum tax rate was 94%.
