deep muscle cuts should not be closed up even with a opening unless you have scrubbed out the fast dying tissue and then suture it closed with a slower absorbing suture (preferably synthetic nonbraided to lower the tissue reaction in that sensitive area) INSIDE the muscle..then you can close up part of the outside. you don't need a pocket starting because then infection sets in..depending on where the dog stays depends on if he should lick it. i never let my dogs lick it because they can have the wrong bacteria transferred over. i very rarely close up deep cuts because they do need to heal from the inside out..only time i suture is if its a superficial tear..he does need stronger antibiotics for a few days and then switch to Amoxicillin For the next Few weeks..make sure it stays wet and clean with the use of hydrogel and if you want something easier to find use honey.. dry wounds will delay healing and hurt a lot more..he needs limited activity as well (staying in a small kennel only letting out to use the bathroom)..going to vet school while hog dogging is a plus! lol and don't forget to constantly remove debris! i think people on here call it hydrotherapy..that does great.
