Here's my take. Removing an antenna from a radio receiver all but kills ur chance of getting a signal. If the signal is strong enough and close enough u can still pick it up thru the coax. Ur coax is part of the antenna as well.
Dropping to a lower channel in close range allows u to track the bleed over of the frequencies instead of the actual signal. A strong signal at close range can bleed over many frequencies.
If any if u have messed with cb's this should make sense. It's kinda like useing ur RF gain and ur needle on the radio to track down the turd head throwing a dead key. Radio interference in these units is understandable. With the high rf gain of these units I would bet wheelers running, truck running, or any other source of electrical power could interfere.
I do know if u gotta dog on the wheeler and u are looking at a distance the closest collars can bleed over several channels
