I've never messed with sugar cane but when I worked for the railroad our tracks ran through thousands of acres of it in South LA. The wind would blow it down, and it would grow sideways along the ground. Come planting time, they burned the fields, and through stalks down on top of the ground, and next thing you know sugarcane is growing
