It could be your spike load dampner it is pretty much a clutch that sits in the front/nose cone of your rear diff it is there when too much torque is applied to the diff it starts to slip its purpose is to prevent parts from breaking. Problem is when it's in 4X4 and it slips it sends the torque up to the front driveline which can cause it to break. Once it starts slipping it will only get worse until you replace it or weld it.
