And where did this bit of breaking news originate from?

Prior to Lander establishing his line in 1964 that made the breed a recognizable standard.  The history of curs can be up to anyone's interpatation. Here is a good site that reflects that info

 Looks like our prideful curs are in fact just mutts that we perfected. I'm not hating on curs I have my own line I run. Jus making a point with the ridgeback it was a blend in one of these centuries.

I've read that before, and it makes no mention of Ridgebacks.  They were bred in Africa.  I could be wrong, but I don't think any of the early American settlers (who bred curs) came from Africa.
