That's rough. I wouldn't leave the cut open, more likely to heal if you sutured him. Keeping it clean with warm water will help him heal quicker.  Might try applying topical antibiotics, and lightly covering it too.  But if this is one of your better dogs I'd take him in, to make sure he heals up right.
