Great story and great dog work and you also LOL .  I believe I would trade that 44 in on a 12 gauge with 1oz solid slugs are 1 oz Defender slugs .  Get you a short 12 with about a 18 to 20 barrel put you a strap on it and throw it around your shoulder he  wont get up at  least I have never had one get up yet and its been manya
