I also have 8 ea 4' x 12' kennels and they are big enough. They are made out of 4" x 4" panel and I used 2" x 4" and ran them through the paneling to make a platform in each kennel. I then also used barrels but I am now switching to plywood houses.
I think 5 x 10 is big enough. I like having 8 kennels. I separate doge by male- female-male-female.
I also have a 10' x 12' kennel on the end for puppies, or a spare dog. If you want to see a pic, send me a PM with your number and I'll text you a pic.
