Sometimes when a dog gets beat up pretty bad they lose their confidence gets shaken...just be patient and he will come around...someone I know culled a good dog with out giving it a chance to come around...

Reuben the fact that someone culled a dog that you thought was good is VERY irrelevant at this point and in fact you have no leg to stand on as far as you comment goes. The dog has been culled and I can PROMISE you if a man did not like a dog and culled him then he made the right choice. Too many guys trade and sale dogs they don't like and that is the problem with the dog world today so it was his dog and he done the right thing no matter what you think, it was his dog.
As far as the question in hand, If this dog had done a good job for me and I had confidence in him I would check him for more serious injuries that might be visible. If he had been cut down he may still have internal issues going back to the cut down that you can't see and it could be causing him severe pain that he can't physically deal with. Different deal but I had a proven dog quit me one time and it turned out he had prostate problems that were causing pain he could not deal with. After the Vet. gave me the medicine to shrink his prostate he was back to normal until he died several years later.
