Sounds like uv sliped a couple teeth on the timing chain and gearing. My old 79 acted the same, ran fine till it got almost to op temp. Couldnt figure it out, changed the volt reg, replaced carb, replaced mechanical pump, even went to a boost pump and blocked off the mech pump hole with a cover plate. I finally pulled the eng apart figuring i dropped a piston or sheared my crank or cam. Come to find out, i jumped 4 teeth from a worn cam chain.
