I have a catahoula ridgeback cross. He's been a very good hunting dog for me, but he's much bigger than I like my strike dogs. He's the big dog in my avatar that looks like a BMC. His sire was a catch dog and he would absolutely man-handle a hog, but wouldn't hit one like a pit does. He would look for his moment to grab the hog by the back of the neck. That being said, I personally wouldn't own another ridgeback or cross for how I like to hunt. I don't see the advantage over a good cur or hard hitting catch dog. However, as far as pets go, they are tough to beat. Great personality and are great with kids/family. You can get one as a pet, and you can hunt him too, I just wouldn't expect him to turn into something great.
