Last year a dog showed up at a friends house wearing a tracking collar without a name plate. He called everyone that he knew that hog hunted and chained the dog where it could be seen for the road for 2 weeks. No one claimed the dog so he called me to see if i wanted to try him. Within a couple of days another friend called me asking some details about the dog and to make a long story short....The dog was stolen 10 months before I got him. The original owner called me and asked about some particular scars that matched up with the dog and he came and got his dog after being stolen for 10 months. At that point I decided to buy a freeze brand and brand my dogs. I know that branding your dogs wont stop someone from stealing your dog but i think it would make someone think twice before they do. And if or when it happens it will make it easier for other people to identify the dog. For example if you tell people (sheriff, neighbors, facebook friends) "be on the look out for my dark brindle dog" that may not mean much to some folks....but if I say "be on the look out for my dark brindle dog with a white "S" and an arrow branded on his side" then those folks can relate something to that dog other than color.

I know this is off the subject of your original questions, but your circumstance helps me see the value of branding my dogs.

Keep looking and collecting information, use the internet (social media) to your advantage by posting ads and pictures, I have found that the majority of the hog hunters out there will do all they can to help someone find their dog, but keep in mind what you say on social media can be used against you in the court of law and you can't do much hog hunting in prison....
