Me and my hunting buddies get pits from the pound to catch with and luckily we've had more good dogs than bad. I would be hesitant to try to get a strike dog from the pound. A quality strike dog is tougher to come by and I would rather not mess with a dog that may not have any hunt in him to begin with. I'm willing to bet a lot of pits end up at the pound due to having some level of dog aggression or are tough to keep contained. That's why it's so important to have a proper kennel set up so you can keep dogs safely separated that don't get along. My #1 advice would be to not just get the first dog you see. Take your time and look hard for the physical qualities you want. There are plenty of pits to choose from. Don't end up in a position with a decent dog that doesn't catch as well as you would like because he needs an extra inch of leg under him, etc. rather than finding the dog that has the physical qualities that can make him great.
