I use to be caught up in wanting a long range dog. To me and my style, range and nose power goes hand in hand. If I have a hot nosed dog I want lots of range and hunt, if I have a cold nosed dog I don't need hunt, I'll find the track for the dog that I want to catch and tie that day!
Hard to figure range when you drop a dog in no sign and he makes a 100 yard loop and hits some rooting. Most people go to catch hogs when they take their dogs out, very few go out to a block where they know there is no hogs just to cast a dog to test his range on a consistent basis.
