If i wanted a dog strictly for protection and not have to worry about it hurting my children i would get a great pyranees or an anatolian shepherd. Whatever they grow up around they will protect. We had them for our goats and sheep growing up.  They would stay with new born goats through cold front while mothers would come up to barn until we came down to get them. One we had grew up around ppl and diidnt care for livestock. He would play with my brothers and I. But sure enough bit my neighbor when she came over unannounced.
