I've got a male cur. He's 8 now, but a couple years ago
We were hog hunting on public land. There was not any fresh hog sign. He picked his head up and started winding. He left out like a bullet. I told my buddies to get ready, he was fixing to bay. But I watched the garmin and he kept going and going. Finally lost signal so we rode ahead and picked him back up. He was still going and headed to  a highway.  He crossed the highway and went another pretty good ways and bayed. When I got there he had about 40
Head of momma cows bayed as pretty as you please. I called him out and went back hog hunting. I knew he winded those cattle a long ways.  I used an app called Planimeter and it showed to be well over a mile (6000 ft).  I use this dog on cattle and if there's no hog sign, he'll find a cow if they're any around.

If your talking about HD then he passes it on to his offspring, the male my father in law is using on cows has a dang good nose on him and can evermore  fly on a hot track....
