Ive had some like that. It is frustrating to say the least. I had once last week...i fully charged and went to put on the dog...stone dead. Luckily i cought it before. I try to do the same as you, give it some before I turn the dog out.
In Fl, we have to by law, have a gps collar with correction on a hunting dog. So to be in compliance, about the only choice is the garmin.
