I’ve been going once or twice a week, just a few hours in the morning then back to the truck. I didn’t think the shoat we caught a couple weeks out was thread worthy. But since I’m here, I get to the parking spot, and while the dogs were running around I was marking the truck on my Garmin. Before I could finish I heard a bunch of rustling in the brush nearby, then I heard grunting. Shortly after I heard the girl dogs and one of the males bark a little, then some more running.
It wasn’t much longer after that I heard the sound of victory, they figured which one of the group they wanted and caught it near the creek. I figured I’d let them get some work in and not crash the party too quick, as I’m making my way to them I hear more grunting in the brush around me. Not knowing what might be waiting to ambush me from my blind side I got my 10mm handy. I had one small pig run past, then another, I walk a little more and I see another in the brush to my right. They were all the same size and not much of a risk.
I put my catch dog Kimber away and get to the dogs, the brush was over my head and thick, I didn’t have to go too far though. I leg her up and try to throw here but those three dogs were playing tug o war with me, so I did the old stick and move. Since we were done so quick I figure maybe these dogs might be able to run the track of the other pigs I saw. They gave it a half hearted effort with the exception of my youngest cat gyp. That hussy went as far as 860 on her own, I was expecting her to come up bayed but she drew a blank.
This is the same spot I caught that last boar in early June, the week after we hit it again. My Pete dog started barking bay, but he’s usually gonna catch, well whatever it was broke and he failed to stop it. I’m assuming it was a group and he didn’t know what to do or which one to grab since he was alone. We continue on and cover this area (it might be 200 acres) and I come across a couple spots where the forest floor was completely rooted to the dirt, like someone took a mulcher through there. Next time I go in there again I’m gonna put some cameras up, I need to see what’s going on in there.
