Have had it happen on numerous occasions. I don't really know why but they are attracted to the dogs baying especially if a hog is squelling. They must think it is a javalina in distress. Couple of years ago they some of us in a tree and I jumped on a stump. Stopped his first charge with a boot to the top of his head but I backed away really quick like.
Take care of those dogs those cuts get infected easily.
