Went to a cow dog trials in early Nov. back at Garvin Ok. at the Coffee arena, that is where they had them early on, maybe 30 or so years ago. Had a good time seeing folks I don,t often get to see and watch an assortment of dogs work. Sat. was all age dogs and the top 4 places went to Todd Webb, Tuff Hardman, La Dell Toons, and Dale Toons in that order, I don't remember who won outstanding dog. My dog appeared to be a bone piler so I didn't do any good on Sat. My wife didn't go , she stayed home to attend our daughters baby shower.
Sunday was Derby Dog day 24 mths. and under. There weren't as many entries as there were on Sat. so they only paid 2 places, Clue Anderson and La Dell Toons, with Dustin Morgan winning outstanding dog.

MANY THANKS TO MONTY MILLER, DUSTIN MORGAN, AND A YOUNG MR. COFFEE FOR MAKING THIS POSSIBLE

Going to another one this weekend near Atoka Ok., Tuff Hardman has put one on for a few years now and I just recently learned of it, so my wife and I are going to go work some dogs in it. I expect to have a good time and see some good dogs work.

In SE OK there is probably a higher concentration of true Cur head dogs used on cattle than anywhere I know of, they are still a part of folks lively hood so their dogs have to be up to snuff, this makes for good watching if you like that style of handling cattle.

I have a buddy who used to hog hunt with us. He got into cow dogs and I don't remember if it was last year or two years ago but he had the only Hanging Tree dog at the National finals and he ended up placing 12th. All the rest were Border Collies. It's amazing to see those dogs work and if you think Hog dogs take a beating those cow dogs really take one.

Lisa and I didn't do any good, dogs worked well but just didn't make smooth enough runs to place. Saw some good Leopard dogs work, as that was mostly what was there, in fact other than one dog I believe ours were the only Blackmouth dogs there. The Leopards had very little if any white on them, mostly dark eyed, good stand up old time Leopard dogs. The only fellow that I knew to remember his name that placed was Ellis Thurman, he was either 2nd or 3rd and also won outstanding dog. Was a good event thanks to the Hardman family for putting it on.

I've never been to a Border Collie, Kelpie, Hanging Tree type of trial, that is an entirely different style of handling cattle. They are real functional, especially in their atmosphere. Lots of command training goes into those dogs.
