I have a friend that owns the local Propane business here. He’s originally from Montana. His nephew now lives in Alaska and usually calls when he comes to visit to see if we can take him hog hunting. He called a couple weeks ago and said he was hoping to be here to watch Montana State play football in Dallas. Well they made it so we made it happen. We had as many as the Montana State football team had. 14 people is what we had. That’s way too many people but it was fun and they were real good guys and one young lady, 12years old.

Yesterday we took Deputy Dawgs set, Ray and Moon for bay dogs and then we had Ranger and Lizzo for catch dogs. We cast the first spot and bayed a solo boar in a briar thicket. They now know what Texas briars can do, lol. We caught him there. He was about 150-170. The dogs left again but didn’t find anything so we toned them back from about .75 and moved to another spot. This time they bayed another solo boar about 180. He broke bay about the time we sent the catch dogs but didn’t make it far before they had him caught. We loaded and cast once more and got another solo boar about 190. He broke bay about the time the catch dogs got to the edge of the brush. He made a little loop and was coming out right where we were. He turned and hit open ground and ole Lizzo sucked him up. It was fun watching her grab the jewels and moving to the ear as soon as he spun to get her. Ranger was right there pretty quick and he was had.

Today we cast my crew, Outlaw, Ava, and their niece Darlin. This was Darlin’s first hunt here. I had a her littermate brother and lost him last year to accident here at home. Just a freak deal but he was really doing well. We cast and were bayed sooner than I expected. They had a whole sounder bayed about 30 seconds after we cast. We caught a boar about 150 there. Before they could get pics, we were bayed again at about 300 yards. We went to that one and caught a sow about 160, but again didn’t have time to take pics before they were 200 yards bayed again. Caught that one and a bunch of snack size ones there. The dogs wanted to leave a direction I didn’t want to go so we caught them up. We went down to the creek and cast again and they were bayed at about 400 yards on a small group. I don’t know if they were a different set of hogs or part of the original group. We sent Ranger and Lizzo again and caught a boar about 175-180. Started taking a picture and they were baying again. Gordon, my friend that owns the Propane business, shot one that broke across the pasture too. We went and caught that bayed hog and the dogs relayed again. They caught another one of those snack size ones and then went about 700 yards and got bayed again. We go there and they were bayed in some pretty bad stuff. It was a mixture of dead tree, blood weeds, briars, and Georgia cane. I guess it heard us when I told them the play and we broke the huddle, because it broke bay. It got to the property line that was about 200 yards away and I called the dogs off. I didn’t want to get any further that direction. We called it a hunt. It was a fun time with some real good guys. All these buddies are from Alaska except for one that lives in Corpus and works in San Antonio.

This Lizzo gyp is the Greyhound/pit of Slim’s. First of her kind that I have hunted. I tell y’all what, I’d take her hands down over about anything I’ve hunted in the last several years. In the brush, she goes in under control and quiet. She will take the path of least resistance. In the open she’ll mash the throttle. She’s quiet and easy going and gets along great with other dogs. I don’t know obviously how “deep game” she is and don’t care to. So far she’s shown to be catch dog tuff. I don’t know yet how much hog she can handle solo, but she’s been real solid so far.

That was an outstanding two trips, and with an audience, that will sometimes jinx you since you want to show them some hogs, and a whole swarm of hogs they did get to see.

If Lizzo is a little light you could probably beef her up a little with one of the new bulldog pups, and still maintain some extra speed.

I forgot the pics. I didn’t get everyone in a picture and didn’t get all the hogs, but y’all get it. I don’t know why, but every time we took pics, instead of saying cheese they would say Thomas is beautiful. I feel like I might really be after hearing it enough.

Yeah it’s been a while. They don’t start back to school until the 8th I think so they wanted to make a round.

Sounds like a good couple hunts. The catchdog sounds nice. Is she hunting line of greyhoud or track bred?

She has some pit in her bud. I THINK Slim said she came out of coyote dogs outside of Texas somewhere.

Thomas, 14 is a herd! I bet that was a good time. I love getting some new guys out on occasion and getting to watch people enjoy what we have made a large part of our life.

Sounds like the dogs did good, always nice when that first one back is a good one. It’s about time to crank back up for us as well. We’ve got next Sunday circled on the calendar. Idk where yet but by god we’re going to go.

Glad to hear yall finally got to see lizzo do what she does in the open. She is a pretty neat dog, and in the right hands is a super useful tool. I am going to have to get some pups out of her. She’s to nice of a dog not to atleast take a shot at it.

Lizzo is out of coyote dogs out of Kansas. I know of one distant relative males that was in Texas on hogs and supposedly good, but the few videos I’ve seen of other related dogs tried on hogs. Lizzo appeared to be the outlier when it comes to willingness to catch and hold and not just bite. They just aren’t bred or wired to do that naturally. They are pack animals.

Slim if our male pups work out, they will be great candidates to go over her. They are athletic and out of very athletic dogs with size and structure. My biggest concern with them is how amped up they are going to get going into the bay. They have a strong prey drive but they are way smarter than the average.

I saw them, showed Tim, he was jealous. Said don’t forget about cardi either if one of them dogs makes. First bulldog male that proves themselves between your circle or mine, she is looking for a boyfriend.

Man I bet those guys had a ball, especially getting into hogs like that. I bet those Northern boys really enjoyed the weather too.
