Tdog can't start a new thread for some reason so I am gonna start this for him. I won't tell too much but it involves collies and a toothy hog.

Well, the story goes like this, once upon a time in eastern central Texas, a wanta be hog hunter was fixing to cast his young dogs to see if they could aggravate him. Well before he could get them collared, he heard dogs baying in the distance. He knew there shouldn’t have been anyone on the place where it was coming from and since he knew that he went to investigate. When he got over there he drove up within 100 yards of a pack of dogs, 7-8 total, giving a boar hog the blues. When I tell you these dogs were working that hog like a pack of wolves I mean exactly that. It was like watching National Geographic or Wild Kingdom. Not one dog had a collar on and when they saw me they did light a shuck getting out of there. I sent my Nala gyp and caught the hog before he could run off. He MIGHT have weighed 150 pounds. He was fleshy but I think pretty old. He didn’t have any power and his teeth were long and curled back on one side with the other being pretty long too.
I’m guessing they weren’t broke off from fighting because he just wasn’t man enough to contest the better boars anymore. Y’all would’ve been impressed with these lab/collie/ who knows what else hounds. I think I know where they strayed from so next gyp that comes in is going to get dropped off. Heck a little more collie isn’t going to hurt my pot lickers.

That’s a good read, after this afternoon I needed a good chuckle. That boar had some lengthy dental work. We caught an old over the hill boar about a year ago, but this thread ain’t about me…

Tell it hollowpoint. You aren’t going to offend me for sure. I feel like this was God looking out for me. I was by myself so he sent a geriatric hog for a geriatric hunter and to keep from bruising my ego he made him look macho. The good Lord always comes through!

I took the dogs I had at the time (1 jagdterrier and that heideterrier) out to my usual spot for an afternoon run. I dropped them on a road we’ve had struck tracks from in the past, well those two lit out of there like their hair was on fire. Then it sputtered a bit and I got the jagd back, but the heideterrier kept running and wouldn’t respond to the tone or anything.

I knew where she was headed so I got the truck and had to drive around to her, I get to a locked gate and set out on foot. I finally get her and I’m a hot potato cuz she was ignoring me big time. So I try to cool my temper and make the best of things and start walking about looking for some trouble to get into. I see an area I think looks like a nice spot to maybe deer hunt from.

The dogs are out doing their thing, as I lean against a tree I see what looks like a silhouette target of a boar standing about 30 yards from me. Just then I noticed my jagd was over there, well he see the boar and starts barking and baying. The boar doesn’t like it and breaks, I think “welp, that’s the last I’ve seen of him”. About 10 seconds later the jagd stops him and bays him up, I start running to get there before the heide because she’s a known bay buster.

I’ve got the target in sight and I hear the other dog coming in hot right behind me. She goes in and catches him on the cheek and holding him there. They go at it for a bit then the boar knocks her loose, I didn’t wait, I move in with my catch dog named Kimber (10mm) and set him down. I felt like we were just a couple over the hill old men doing the dance. He was worn out and full of scars, but it was a good experience for the dogs.

I can’t believe you didn’t ear upon the other side. That would’ve really made the story. I mean or Kimber is reliable I know but just think of the bragging rights. Better yet if you had eared up and took a selfie, now that would’ve been a story for the ages.

Seriously though, I’m surprised the jadg wasn’t as r rougher than the Heide but I’m definitely not a terrier a buff for sure.

I might’ve considered it if I thought I could depend on the heide to keep the hold, that would’ve been a great selfie. He (the jagd) has been getting rougher this past year, but he has a new zip code now due to his dog aggression. I keep hearing the voice of someone saying, if your dogs aren’t catching you hogs, you need new dogs. I don’t like dog jockeying and I’ll give them more chances than some other folks. But I don’t have any of the three that I moved here with and the roster has been rebuilt.

That’s called the feeling out process bud. Some people are able to make the hard decisions and others can’t. The ones that can’t don’t usually last. The ones that can and also take advice as well as learn from examples set usually thrive. I believe you to be the latter of the two.

There’s an old saying that I hear in my head pretty regular and I have a tendency to apply it in different scenarios than it was originally intended. It tells that there was an of Indian Cheif talking to his grandson. He told him that we all have two wolves fighting inside of us. One wolf is Good and the other is bad. The grandson asks which wolf wins and the Chief replies “the one you feed”!  In your case you can keep what isn’t working and producing for you (the bad wolf) or you can move them and get something productive (the good wolf).

Another similar anecdote a friend from east Texas told is a bit more crude but the message is the same. It costs the same to feed a good dog as it does a piece of s____!

I prefer to feed the good wolf, I’ve fed enough to the turd eaters.
