Tyson was given to us April 2008 at ~ one year old, while he doesn't quite fit the "ideal catch dog" description for most people, he has his place with us. His primary fault is that he catches wild, pretty much wherever he can sink a tooth, is where he is going to hold. Most times it's the snout, or a front leg, or possibly even an ear Now we have used Tyson to catch a little bit of everything for us this past year. Here is his first pig, he was never formally started, we just took him to the woods, and cut him loose when we got near the bay. We got Chris and Mandi's bulldog on his first hog yesterday. They were in a deep creek swimming and once he found a "hole" thru all the other dogs he latched on. The dogs bayed a big group and as soon as he heard them he wanted to go. We got to the creek and he dove off of a 15ft. high bank and swam across. Not too bad for his first... I think he'll make a good one. Our youngest daughter claimed Tyson as her dog, here he is with Kailey. This day Tyson was called on by a rancher to catch a little heifer calf that they could not get caught. Pork and Beef Tyson on a decent red boar, that's loaded in the picture with the calf. Tyson with his coyote Now for Tyson's latest challenge... We start his CGC class next week, with the hopes of having him as a certified therapy dog. The lady running the class is excited about his participation too. We just told her he was a working dog, then when she asked what we meant by "working dog", she was told that he is a hog dog. After learning what his "day job" is, she was even more excited to see if he will make the cut as a therapy dog. I think he has what it takes, but the ultimate decision will be made after his training is finished, and he is tested. Here is a link that describes what he must do to get his CGC, then be Therapy dog certified. http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfmIt may not seem like much of a task for many dogs, but this is a pretty big task for Tyson, as he is pretty dense

Thats pretty cool Chris, I think it would be a challenge for any bulldog, unless its an older one that is used to constantly walking on a leash with a few hunters around. Good luck Tyson...

Julie has done quite a bit of CGC research and I have spoken with Lamar about it on several occasions. All three of us agree that Sadie could pass the test. I think there is a probability that Sadie would pass assuming that the puppy introduction goes smoothly.
If Sadie has a chance, Tyson will have NO problem!

I think that these two items will be the most difficult for Tyson. The other items he ought to take in stride. Simple for our aussies, but Tyson wants to hunt, anytime he is off leash, he is GONE. Test 6: Sit and down on command and Staying in place
This test demonstrates that the dog has training, will respond to the handler's commands to sit and down and will remain in the place commanded by the handler (sit or down position, whichever the handler prefers). The dog must do sit AND down on command, then the owner chooses the position for leaving the dog in the stay. Prior to this test, the dog's leash is replaced with a line 20 feet long. The handler may take a reasonable amount of time and use more than one command to get the dog to sit and then down. The evaluator must determine if the dog has responded to the handler's commands. The handler may not force the dog into position but may touch the dog to offer gentle guidance. When instructed by the evaluator, the handler tells the dog to stay and walks forward the length of the line, turns and returns to the dog at a natural pace. The dog must remain in the place in which it was left (it may change position) until the evaluator instructs the handler to release the dog. The dog may be released from the front or the side.
Test 7: Coming when called
This test demonstrates that the dog will come when called by the handler. The handler will walk 10 feet from the dog, turn to face the dog, and call the dog. The handler may use encouragement to get the dog to come. Handlers may choose to tell dogs to "stay" or "wait" or they may simply walk away, giving no instructions to the dog.

That's a great challenge! I think it is a great thing for bully breeds as well as hog dogs to be represented in the CGC program. When it comes to standing up against BSL or restrictions on working dogs, a nationally recognized certificate proving your dogs good manners will be a great counterpoint. And what sort of therapy do you plan to do with him? Steve is right, if Sadie could almost pass, it should be a cake walk for most dogs Lamar and I did the whole test at PetSmart one day, and Sadie did fantastic job, except for reacting to another dog. We tried to test her with a friendly pit pup and she tried to rip his face off. Sigh... Anyway, keep us posted!

Chance, So far it looks pretty good. I will try to get some pictures of the dogs brands and update the freeze branding post. Julie, This "therapy dog" group is involved with the local hospitals. Methodist, Memorial Herman, etc. They ask that you make one visit per month to any hospital in their group, and let the patients get some hands on time with the dog. Tyson has an excellent temperament, it's his lack of obedience/ thick headed nature that make this simple task somewhat challenging

Tyson has an excellent temperament, it's his lack of obedience/ thick headed nature that make this simple task somewhat challenging I think that most catch dogs, certainly all of ours, would make great therapy dogs if it weren't for exactly that.... I think that they prefer therapy dogs don't jump in peoples laps and lick their faces Steve

My pit Maddie passed her CGC last Saturday. The lady who did the testing told me that the bully breeds rate at the top when it comes to passing the test. Good luck with your dog.

Shouldnt be a problem. It is really simple. I took the test, but failed because the dumb bunnies decided to administer the test while the protection tournment was going on and my boy wasnt in the mood to do anything but play for blood! Joey

Joey,
Krystal said the same thing, that it should not be a problem....I know a couple of things he needs work on, if I can get him past those couple of issues, it's downhill from there.

Make sure he is fine with a bicycle. Between the decoys doing the protection tournament and firing off starter guns and then that woman pushing the bike at him it is a wonder that he didnt grab her. He is catch dog first and protection sport dog second, if that protection tournament wouldnt have started up I would have passed, but to be honest Red isnt a Canine Good Citizen and I wouldnt dare take him to a crowded place. I just wanted some more letters and numbers behind his name.
