Hey yall! Id like some advice on the different way yall train yall CDs. After they are intoduced to hogs and know what they are...would running them with my buddies and letting her go at the bay be a good way? or would that be a way some of you introduce your dogs to hogs? or would having my dogs bay a hog in a controlled situation(pinned hog) and letting her go? or just her and the hog in the pin? Id apreciate all opinions and advice!  Thanks Yall! Oh and does anyone know who has the Garmin the cheapest?

i am no expert, but IMO, put the dog with the hog and see if it will try to catch. Then let the dog watch the bay dogs work the hog from the outside of the pen, let them get interested and know what is going on when the other dogs are baying. Then after you let them watch a couple times, and they act like they really want it, take them on a test run. Hobble the hog and take it to where the CD wont be able to see the hog or other dogs. Let the bay dogs go to it and start baying. After they have bayed, turn the bulldog loose and let him go to it and see what happens. I wouldnt use a hog that is too big or rough, especially if it is the dogs first time at catching. This should atleast get him to learn what a bay is and to go to it. You may have to let him practice catching a few time to let him learn how and where to catch. Running it with a buddies dog should work too, but i would let yours go just alittle bit after his, so your dog will see his go in and catch. JMO, and im pretty sure there are plenty of different ways to do it.  Wink

I like to turn mine in behind a finished cd and let instincts take over.

Bcox, I am training by hunting behind a trained RCD. Worked with Beagles and works with Hog dogs so far.                       John

ok. thanks guys. I really would rather have a walk in CD instead of RCD. One reason is being new to this and the dogs being new to this i want to be there to help as soon as i can. Yall have any opinoins on this?

Bcox, sorry I got you off on a different route. My point is I would train behind a walk-in catch dog and it would learn by example. Should work in a pen or in the woods.         John

the key with catch dogs is their confidence...start them with seeing a hog in a trap until they are confident with getting close to the trap biting the sides and charging the trap etc.....then let him in a pen with the smallest pig you can get and let the dog build its confidence with that pig (don't not move on to a larger pig till your dog is completely confident!!) continue this by increasing the size of the pig till you feel he is ready for the woods....This should be done over a long period of time as the dog is growing up but be sure not to let the dog catch a hog too early cause you want his teeth to set which i feel is around 1 year old!

If you take it easy in the beginning and let the dog build its confidence you'll have a great catch dog!!

I've learned this with the help of Mr. Mason!

Personally, i never put a catchdog on a pig that isnt bigger than him/her. I want the dog to learn to catch, not to kill. in my opinion they need to learn how to handle a hog instead of just trying to kill it. as far as confidence, if they dont have that then its time to re-evaluate the breeding program. At my house they either catch....or dont.
