I don't know what's going on with the hogs we've been chasing over the last 4-6 wks but they have been rallying big time to help their buddies. Here are a couple instances....
1. The days of days of cutting one catchdog loose into a bay stopped when we walked up to the catchdog caught on a sow and a big boar caught on the catchdogs vest. The boar was shaking the crap out of the vest but some how the dog didn't suffer any damage. It took us getting uncomfortably close and loud to scare it off.
2. Two weekends ago we sent one catchdog in and my buddy starts giving the frantic hand sign to cut my dog loose too. I do and the bay breaks and we end up catching two hogs about 10' apart. What I didn't know was that when his dog hit about 8 hogs jumped in on him and turned into a fight. All I saw was the pile of hogs and the break but I bet it was pretty crazy looking.
3. We had one group of about 5 hogs try to come behind us as we were approaching a caught hog. They were surprised to see us so they swung about 50 yards wide and tried the rush the from the other side right in front of us.
4. Last weekend we sent two catchdogs in to a blown over tree and they caught out. We saw the sounder break as the catchdogs hit and one came running towards us so we cut another dog loose. The hog turned to run away back towards the caught hog and we saw the catchdog peel off and run towards the squealing. We were all pissed until the blown down tree blew up when he caught a hog about twice as big about 5' from the other dogs. I have to think it was a foiled sneak attack.
If they want a gang fight they'll get a gang fight.....so we've been sending two catchdogs in everytime and keeping a third on the lead as we go in just in case. Many times the third dog has been used lately.
Anybody else been seeing more of this type of activity lately? It sure makes things interesting.

We've had this happen before. Most of the time we bay up single hogs, but friend had a dog cut bad when baying a pack of hogs. The dog was baying on one when a big boar snuck him from behind.

4-10 on average. Most seem to be groups of healthy sows. One instance was 1 sow and 5 boars.

Sunday we had abunch of sows rallied up under a fallen down tree and they cut up to bay dogs before we got there and when I rolled up with the CD everyone yelled don't let em go,,,we don't have enough dogs! They were right, there were probably 15 big hogs in that one bunch and everytime one of the bay dogs would go in to try and bite one, all the other hogs ran the dog off. We ended up with 4 but did not want anymore cut up dogs so we decided well get them some other time. Last night my girlfreind(Mrs. ktchemwcurs)and I were at the house and we heard a bunch of them behind my house, sounded like a sow in heat or something. I think this time of year they are all in big groups. Havin babies and makin babies!

One thing I would add to my previous post that others have touched on is I would be VERY hesitant to cut one or two bulldogs to a group that is bayed. Maybe if you are really close and the situation is marginally under control but just cutting them loose where you cant see the hogs all you can hear is dogs barking and hogs chattering is a very un-nerving situation. A few weeks ago we watch the dogs bay and break and bay over and over again on about 25+ grown hogs and we had three catch dogs ready to rumble, but if there are even three or four boars in that bunch that know anything they are gonna wreck shop on everything you have on the ground!

we tirned out the other week and dogs bayed within a min. had 2 bmc/rcd out before we got there they broke.went about 600yrds and they caught a 175# boar.both rcds were bit on the back knee and they both catch on the head.only thing we could figure was they got peeled off.

We were just talking about this the other day. All the sows are having pigs or about to have pigs... baying right up and not trying to run.
I'm assuming they come back into heat pretty quick after having a litter? The boars were in the bunch this weekend and were caught/and chased on several recent hunts.

I'm with the thought that blames the rallies on piggy sows and boars coming in to breed them. Every sow we catch is either with pigs or about to be. One even started farrowing while she was bayed! Enjoy the baying while it lasts, come may or june they will all be wearing their nike running shoes again! Cheers M

We used to hunt one catch dog as well, but now we usually lead two to three to be on the safe side when all are healthy.

When we get a bunch bayed up we just send the catchdogs and follow right in behind them. We sort it out when we get in there!

I agree with Mike, a couple of weeks ago we caught 2 big boars within 200 yards from one another and there were sows and piglets everywhere. We figure that there must have been a couple of sows in the bunch in heat.

That's exactly what happened to me a week ago, except I only got one cut on one of my dogs. I guess I got lucky with it being 10 boars/barrs
