depends on the situation id say. if its in the open w/ nothing for the hog to get the penned into then 50-60yds isnt unreasonable. If its thick 20-30yds if your right behind him. if hes an older dog and a good count then depending on what your goal for the hog is, are both something that goes into that decision. my standard now for goin on 10 years is in between 30 and closer w/ a good dog one that is just starting i want ot give him a little longer to get that good catch so he'll be out to 50 and 60 but im right behind him. hope that helps

I just like to see the bay, and see the CD hit the hog, so ill get as close as i can trying to lay eyes on the hog. Now if it was real thick, and i didn't think i could get close without making a bunch of noise id let the CD go at the edge of the thick stuff. And if the hog was bayed in a wide open field i may be pretty far away when i let the CD go.
I think most of us would like to see a bay, but catching the hog takes priority, sometimes you have to make a judgement call.
Good question

Depends on the situation, I like to be within sight... but normally a 100 yards or less.

I agree. We get within 60 yards depending on the situation.

With these running A$$ hogs i usually turn the catch dog to em anywhere from 100-300 yards out Most of the time about 200 yards.

Any where from 30 yards to 150 yards depending on where we are. In the wide open grain fields I'll send the catchdog in from a long ways away if the bay keeps breaking/moving.

I think everybody will agree it depends on each situation! I think that you should be confident that your catch dog will get to the bay from what ever the distance. What I see up here is a lot of these kids turn a so called catch dog loose and they never make it to the bay. Then they end up loosing them/leaving them and that's a whole nother story! JMO

In my limited experience it can depend on the hog as well. I bayed one a few weeks ago that i could get within ten feet of in the open, and ended up catching it by roping it as I didn't have a catch dog. Last week I bayed one that would break at about 20 yards in thick cover. I'm just learning, but that is some of my experience.
