Give me a catch dog with brains and handle. One I dont have to lead.......ever! Will stay with me until I send him to a bay on command only. From the back of my mule. A very trainable dog that is smart about catching. Not a Kamikaze. OK I will buy one (pup). Just tell me who is breeding them. I have had the privilege of owning just two in the past that would fit this description. Got totally lucky with them. One was a double registered cat and the other was pit x bmc. I doubt either could find a hog in a dog house with them but they where sure fine catch dogs and trainable as they come. I want another one!!! I just dont want to wait on getting lucky again. All suggestions and input are greatly appreciated.

No help to you but I have a female Eli/Redboy Pit catchdog myself that is exactly what you had..Can box with anything, has a great handle, walks in right beside me no leash required, will go in when we get close. Have two 5 mo pups from her and my stud cat.

A lil too late on your request brother I knew I would hear from you on this one Alan. Im definitely regretting not getting that pup now. I will tell you this. Put me at the top of the list the next time Hank climbs the fence! I just figured I could find someone breeding catch dogs like this and not just the accidental crosses that most get lucky with. I know you kept that pup long enough to know what he was going to do but you figured he would have a lot of hunt in him also. That was the deciding factor to me on that pup but I wish I would have tried it now. I know that desire to please combined with handle can override the hunt in that cross with the right training but it has been a combination hard for me to find in a dog. A dog with a huge desire to catch, standing 50 yards from the bay beside his handler, unleashed, and waiting on his command. That is special in a good catch dog in my opinion. Its funny. I figured this would be a good topic. It has been. But most of the replies so far have been by way of PM.

Alan,
I had a full pit some years back that was exactly as described. I could give him both verbal or hand commands. I've seen dogs catch better, but the overall package he brought to the table has not been matched in my eyes. I never felt nervous going in to the bay with that dog. He was a good one. By my own stupidity, I heat stroked him. Lesson learned.

BoarNinja, I have a 1/2 pit & 1/2 BMC, Old Spanky, he is just like that, he is very smart. He will even let go when you tell him "DEAD HOG". Laci is going to breed him when her Roxy(1/2BMC & 1/2Cat) comes in so I will definantly let you know. They are some good minding gritty dogs. They are some big, long legged, SOG's but they will catch what ever is bayed up!

Bout every catchdog we hunt with fits that bill, accept when you get real close to the bay it is better to leash them. And the ones that don't will soon. All it takes is obedience, obedience, and more obedience, followed with the use of tritronics occasionally if neeeded.

BoarNinja , Dang, I'd like your catch dog...seems you are a man who appreciates and understand the value of brains in a dog ... IF I had to start with just one thing in a breeding program or in any single dog, brains would be number one. Now if you could teach a dog to read, the papers might get up there close. lol Wiithout brains I don’t find it much pleasure to train or live with a dog. After a man has a smart dog, then his understanding, ability, desire and commitment, comes into play and will sure determine the handle. If I may I'd like to add a couple things to your description of the kind of catch dog you like. " No dog aggression period. On the way to hunt, he rides like a gentleman in the box with any other dog or dogs. When he catches, I am confident he is game and will stay hooked and give it all he's got, cut, stomped, bitten or run over. When I walk in, I want to tap him on the head or snap a leash on him; he turns loose, backs out and sets quietly. " Once a man has had one like you describe, he understands what a pleasure that is. I really despise a flipping out dog, dumb dog, and uncontrollable, unmanageable or emotional idiot but sometimes it's not the dog’s fault. It honestly dooms any chance for overall excellence in my view. Dogs that will catch and do a decent job of that are a dime a dozen, It's like you say, It's all that other stuff that’s tough to find to put the whole package together and have a dog that is a pleasure to use, train and handle. But, like a lot of other things, a lot of those opinions and priorities gets back to a man who values the dog work above the photo shot many times.

I agree that a lot of training will be involved but unless its a lucky cross, a lot of breeding is the main requirement in my opinion. Sounds like yall have it figured out. skoalbandett you have added to my description perfectly! A dog like this is a pleasure to use. The catch dogs I have owned recently sure make me want one like you have described. I need one too. I have some pretty good leads this kind of catch dog now. Thanks for all the input folks!
