Red mange can only surface on dogs with weakened immune systems. The genetic defect is usually transmitted to the pups through the mother. Sometimes the mother would have showed no signs of mange her entire life and might just be a carrier. You can put pups in a pen together and only those pups with this genetic defect will break out. All dogs basically have mange, it only flourishes in those dogs that have the compromised immunity. It will usually show up between 7 months and one year if its going to. It can be controlled by giving 1/10th cc to 1/4 cc Ivomec every day until it goes away, but it CANNOT be cured. Once you get em over it, it probably will never come back, but can resurface under extreme stress, such as female whelping pups, or a dog that gets overheated and worked extremely hard. Never breed a dog with mange, they WILL pass it on to their pups.

All the above mentioned is true...the cheapest way to fix it (and most effective) is with borax, 1% peroxide, and water give a bath one time a wk for 8 wks then let air dry. then mix it up in a spray bottle and spray it on throughout the wk. it is cheap and amazingly effective without killing kidneys like ivomec. for the mixing ratio look it up online or if you cant find it shoot me a pm and i will dig it out. After spending 500$ at the vet and having it go away athen come back after the drugs wore off i found this cure online and it is dirt cheap and had amazing results because my old dogo and her siblings had it...mine much worse than the rest. worked great but still culled her due to other reasons..its a pain in the butt.
