Every Friday my daughter and I go and spend the day in town doing something special, usually just going to the movies and out for lunch.  It is a time that we always look forward to.  Today we decided that we were going to go and stroll through the area animal shelter.  I know better than to do it because it breaks my heart to see how people can get these animals then just throw them away the way they do.  While walking through the pens and looking at all these sad little dogs we ran across 5 pit bulls.  They were the sweetest dogs that anyone could imagine.  I petted them, and cuddled them.  They were healthy looking, none worst for wear only to learn that because of the breed they were,  they would be put to sleep.  They said they are unacceptable to be placed into any home.  This town Bryan/College Station Texas has some kind of bylaw that does not allow those breed of dogs to be placed into any home once they are in the system.  As I was looking at the dogs I was wondering if the people that decided to put a dog down felt that toward a child that had a fight or threw a temper tantrum would they be considered bad blood?  How can they do this to a poor defenseless animal?  Is there anything that a person can do that can maybe get this type of bylaw changed to where these animals could actually be given a chance at life? I understand that there are some dogs that need to be put down, but not all.  Is there any suggestions that maybe would help to change things for these animals?  Who knows maybe one of those dogs could be the best bay dog or even a catch dog and still be a wonderful family pet, goodness knows I have several that are rescue animals and one of them is an awesome family pet and a great catch dog.
Sorry it just broke my heart and I needed to blow off steam.  Thanks for listening.

Copperas Cove does the same thing.  If a pit or even a smaller AB that looks like a pit goes in there they get three days for the owner to claim them and then are put down.

Robin,

Sometimes they will let a rescue take those dogs. Perhaps get with a pit rescue and maybe you can get the good ones into foster or hunting homes. I had thought about trying to put together a hunting dog rescue, but it would take a lot of manpower as well as homes willing to take a chance on a pound puppy.

Before craig got Tater, he was in a pound in arkansas. Had he been put down because of his breed, the world would have one less trash broke horse broke bulldog   Cool

Cheers
