I know how I view this, but I would like to hear what you all have to say. When I hear about a dog's ranging ability, it means how far a dog will go out in search of a hog track when they have nothing to start with. Meaning, you dump the dog blindly, and it goes in search of a hog. However, once a dog starts a track, it no longer has anything to do with the dogs range, but rather moves more towards his bottom. What is your opinion?

I agree. A lot of people seem to get the two confused and think they have longer range dogs, when they just have a lot of bottom. Hunting properties with no or very few hogs will tell you a lot about your dogs range.

X2 x3. IMO way too many people mistake bottom for range.

10-4 Range and bottom are 2 different things. Id rather have way more bottom than range. I say that know but last night the bottom of my hound was pissing me off about 2am when I wanted my pillow. IMO There is too much hype and BS going on about this whole "RANGE" of a dog.

X2 When it is time to go i want to be able to go and not drive a few miles to try and stop a dog from hunting BUT if it is on a hog then diffrent story

That all becomes a "handle" issue. I leave the woods with my dogs, when I am ready, not when they are ready. Oh, and yes, I do hunt hounds. Plenty of references for those who doubt you can teach a hound to come back in when called. I have literally called them off a track when they were only 20 yards behind a hog, because of one reason or another. Wether they can see the hog or not, when I say it is time to load up, we're all loading up including the hounds. I don't settle for less. Set standards and live by them. You'll enjoy life more. I promise.

I thought a dog that will stay with a track is a dog with a colder nose, I thought a dog that stays with a hog after it breaks a bay and continues to bay up the hog and stays with him if he breaks again was a dog with bottom.

Range= how far dog goes to find track/ Bottom= how long the dog can stay on track with out rest/ Cold nose= Can find old track say over two days old/ Hot nose= track needs two be less than 48hrs old. This is JMO and everyone allways disagree on the time of a cold or hot track

What I say first, then everything else if I'm feeding you. Kids and dogs need guidence in life. I'm just here to provide that service to them. As for making them quit, I think it has the opposite effect on them. If anything it makes them try harder to finish the job before it's time to go. JMO!

I've seen that cutter in the bmc pup in workin with now. If he's not getting it done and I run out of time and load him up. Each time that's happened the nexttime I work him he seem grittier and more determened to get it done. I think may have to do with the amout of praise after wards. One time it's (kennel kennel and load up) and the next it's (good boy way to go good boy). And he knows when I'm pleased with him or not. That the bond between owner/trainer and dog.
