trailer queston

i am making a utility/dog trailer out of an old 16ft boat trailer and the tong is a little long. Going to cut some of the tong off but not sure how much i need to leave

get a piece of string tie one end to ball hitch ,other end six or eight inches past the side of your truck and mark measure the string and that is your tongue length!!        (caveman style)G/L
