another question for the pros.... what are some of the beddings you all use in you kennels or dog houses? with the winter months coming i figured i would ask. i have used hay and cedar shavings but had a vet tell me one time that cedar shavings was not good. so what do yall use?

Cedar can irritate respiratory tract and some dogs have allergies to it. They swell up like a balloon. Some people maintain that pine shavings are bad as well, but no dog I have ever had has had a reaction to non cedar horse bedding. We use regular kiln dried shavings on our floors in cold weather, but rake it all up before the fleas start to emerge in the late spring. Our dogs are inside the barn so the shavings dont get wet. I like to use good clean hay in dog houses and dog boxes.

Maybe that is why my dogs had it raked out of their houses by the next morning the few times that I have tried it. All I use now is hay. About 10 years ago while I was out of the country, my wife went out and bought those big expensive dog mattresses for each dog after hearing the weather mans predictions of ice and snow. She spent around $40 bucks each on them. It never snowed but it sure looked like it at my house the next day! Every single one had been pulled out by the dogs and shredded to pieces!!! I just stick to hay now. On the super cold nights I will fill the dog houses up completely so the dogs can burrow a nest. They love it! |

my vet said that same thing about the respiratory allergies and cedar. my wife always wants to bring them in the house but after about ten minutes of catahoulas running through the house wipping everything off the tables with their tailss,,,back outside they go. lol

Cotton burrs, a pickup load at the local gin will run you about $20. great insulator and soft, my dogs love them.

Knock on wood I have had zero problemas with cedar.Even with the crazy skinned Dogos.They actually like it morethan my curs.And been using it for at least 10 yrs.

cotton burrs would be great.... these piney woods dont grow much cotton. darn
