G W asked wat would we would do about a D H shooting one of are dogs? all my granddad said. we would be less one deer hunter today. eye for eye and tooth for tooth. but we went on and hunted and caught 2 hogs it was a good night

I like your grand daddy's response a lot.

BUT, the dogger you referred to screwed up! If he wasn't going to kill the deer hunter, he should have called the Sheriff. According to Texas State law, a deer hunter shooting a dog just for showing up at his deer feeder is a punishable offense. The dogger screwed up an opportunity to make an example out of that jack ass!

Just the reason I haven't hunted since mid oct. I'd go nuts if my dog got shot be like shooting one of my boys. Figure I'll be hunting hard when Jan. Gets here, my dogs have been going nuts in the kennels. Sorry to hear about the dog. Hunter had it coming prolly lucky he didn't get worse. ( hog tied and put in the holding pen with watermellon in his shorts. )!!

Just want to make sure I understand here but are you saying the hog hunter stabbed the deer hunter or just put his knife to the deer hunters chest?

dad always told me dont start no sh** wont be no Sh**. a man can tell a hunting dog from a stray or just a house dog running loose, the hunter did more harm by poppen of a shot, instead of letting the dog go on by. wish i could have been there to help justify his ignorance!!!

Did the guy who's dog got shot have permission to be on the property that his dog was killed on?  I like to hog hunt every chance I get, but I am also a deer hunter.  If I am deer hunting a place that I have put my time, effort, and money into and a dog (hog dog or not) comes by, I am going to be pissed.  For all the people with the "let's whip the deer hunters ass" attitude, how about use some common sense and not get your dogs, yourself, or the deer hunter in that kind of situation.  You are just as responsible for you dog being killed as the deer hunter is if you and/or your dog is not where you have permission to be.  If some guy I didn't know came onto my property threatening me I'm afraid that would end badly for him.  Everyone knows the dog does not know the property boundaries, but the person responsible for the dogs should.  People running hog dogs during deer season on property they do not have permission to be on is a big sh-- stain for hog hunters.  That is the kind of stuff that is going to get us shut down.  When irresponsible hog hunters cause these types of situations by their lack of consideration it hurts the entire hog hunting community.  Whether you like it or not hog hunters are heaped into one big pile in the publics eye.

Just like danger zone said, thats why we dont hunt during gun season! Unless we have a lot of country to run that we know no one is deer hunting we're not gonna go.

Like said before dogs don't know fencelines and if my dog runs on another property and I hear a shot and the garmin shows my dog not moving I guarantee I will be crossing the fence too. When I get there and my dog is dead there will be problems. I'm not a big guy but I promise if you kill my dog you will regret it. Probably wouldn't stick a knife in you but it won't be good.

TXhogdoggin-  I understand your feelings towards someone shooting your dog but......just like outlawslayer stated, it is our responsibility as hog doggers to give respect to deer hunters and when they are hunting.  It is to easy to start our hunts later in the night when all the deer hunters have gone.

Outlawslayer-  I hunt places that are heavily managed for deer.  With that said they have no problem seeing big bucks and getting their tags filled every year.  What I am saying is this.....TRUELY FINISHED AND TRASH BROKE DOGS do not interfere with deer hunting. If the dog is chasing the deer do what you have to do  but I would be fighting mad if you shot my dog when it walked under your feeder....because I know he was not running deer!!!  It is VERY easy to see if a dog is running the deer off or not.  In my opinion if you cant tell that you should not be sitting in that deer stand!!!

look guys . the hog hunter was on a 5000 acre ranch and they crossed the road went in to trinity sand plant and ended up by his feeder. d h said it chased the deer away from the feeder. in the state of tx. U CAN NOT SHOOT A DOG UNLESS IT IS THREATING YOU OR DESTROYING YUR PROPERTY. i raised fighting chickens for 24 yrs and i used to shoot every dog i seen because nobody would pay me for my roosters. i stopped wen the police in my county told me you cant shoot a dog just for being on yur place. it has to be doing something wrong , bite you or chasing cows horses breaking in to chicken coop THEN YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO KILL IT. I UNDER STAND ALL DEER HUNTERS SPEND ALOT OF TIME AND MONEY TO KILL BAMBI, BUT NOBODY OWNS THE DEER.... so i thank it is wrong for a deer hunter or land owner to shoot a dog if it comes by yur stand or acrooss food plott. because deer are not live stock or does land owners own them there wild game. I THANK HE CAN BEAT THE LAND OWNER IN COURT, CAUSE DONT YOU THANK THE HOG HUNTER WAS JUST PROTECTING HIS (PROPERTY- HOGDOG) JUST LIKE THE DEER HUNTER. i my self have caught hogs right bee hind this guys house but it was past mid night. thats y i hunt at night. but now mr brown the hog hunter is in trouble cause he pulled a knife and didnt use it . but the 2000 dollar dog just cost him more money.OVER BAMBI...

agteach:  I agree dogs don't run deer off a place.  However, even trash-broke dogs can still ruin a deer hunt while they are looking for hogs.  I don't want to see dogs or hogs while I am deer hunting.  As far as trash-broke goes, at this point my dogs are game producers in that nobody knows what they are chasing from one minute to the next!  They would be good frontier dogs.  I've got one pup that has dirt on her nose pretty regular for some reason.

M Bennet:  I agree that landowners don't on the game on their land.  Although, if someone owns or leases land they should be able to hunt without someone else's dogs running all around their place.  I agree it's wrong to shoot the dog because its not the dog's fault.  It's the dog's owners fault for putting the dog in that situation.

Does anyone know if a dog owner can be charged with something for letting his dog across a property line, if the dog's owner never crosses?

The game warden told us lastnight that we could call dogs back from the fenceline. It's not illegal until you cross the fence.

you  no whats bad the hog hunter was 30 yrds from his dog and watched it get shot, i under stand he shouldnt been hunting in day light hours but this guy takes any young kid from that town and shows them about hunting. iv been in on this place to get my dogs and theres a creek that runs 10 yrds from feeder and i bet his dog came up the creek and poped out on a game trail. im not trying to start a arguement between dh and hh , im just saying be careful out there hog hunting. to me both are in wrong but the deer hunter had luck on his side, cause the other hog hunters around here would have caused a mess in that deer stand and there would have been a funeral in 3 days. im going to meet with this land owner and let him no i hunt to big ranchs west of him and right out in front of his house 3500 acres im just leting him no wats going on with me helping these ranchers im going to try and make a friend but we will see.

Steve, do you know the actually state statute that outlines this law?  I'd like to keep it on me just in case I ever run into the small town scenario of the shooter and cop know each other so the cop doesn't want to do anything to his buddy.
