I heard there were some bugs. I'm wanting to buy a new tracking system but I'm scared of what a few people have said about them. I want something that will work a couple miles maybe 3 in the woods. Everytime I go to buy one, something new comes out or the one I want ends up having problems. What do y'all have the best luck with?

IMO, if your wanting something to pick up at 3 miles, you would be better off with a radio tracking system. Dont think a Garmin will help you too much at that distance without the long ranged antenna, which still doesnt pick up that far in really thick woods or brush. Atleast thats my experience with them.  |

Just got back today from a 3 day hog/bear hunt in east TN. I don't use my dogs on bear, so they stayed home. I did take one of my DC-40 collars with me to test on a long winded Plott hound. It worked great.....I was more than impressed. This was the first time I've been able to check the thing on a long race.....we turned on a bear track on a Mtn. and they left like a rocket burning up the bear. Off into the valley and I finally lost signal for a bit at 3.2 miles when they treed it, but it jumped out before anyone could get there and I lost the signal for a short time again. I will add that we were really high which of course added to the range considerably I'm sure. Used it the next day on a hog race and this time we were in a big hollow and it worked out to about 600 yards with the short range antenna which was as far as the race got from us. I'm sold on them and can see now that this is a tremendous tool for the dog hunter. I was able to see right where the dogs were in relation to the roads and creeks, I installed a free Topo download of AL, GA, and east TN in my receiver not long ago, shows everything. I'll still run a radio collar on my dogs, but the Garmin system is just as important.
