Kennel Odor?

The wife is always complaining about the smell of my kennels.  I have ten dogs on concrete with a roof and one on a chain on the dirt.  All are males with the exception of two females.  I have a concrete drain that runs the length of the pen that drains into a septic tank system of two fifty-five gallon drums underground.  I clean the pens everyday by means of shoveling the crap and hauling it off and then spraying down the pens.  I usually clorox the pens once a week as well.  I believe the smell is coming from the pee?  Any ideas other than moving the pens which is not an option?

i think the smell is from the sour food that gets washed down. the problem with my drain system was there was no pee trap in line. i bought a RV sewer valve and installed it in the drain pipe right close to where it comes out of the kennel. this stopped the sewer smell from coming up through the drain system with no pee trap to get clogged. i have to make sure everything gets sprayed down the drain i use to sweep the left over food out the door but it would stink bad after a few days.

Making poop and pee smell good is the family business. I will check a few things and see what suppliers are in SC. But a little pine sol in water and brush the cement with it and a push broom. Or you could get one ode those cheap garden hose sprayers and put the pine sol in there and hose it down. If that does not do the trick PM me and I will get you some industrial stuff.

I have been using the concentrated clorox, but will buy a bottle of pine sol and try it.

The bleach will kill what is there but the source is still there. The pine sol will stick around to help mask the new odors. You will still have to keep cleaning like you are. But a little pine sol and water in a hose sprayer each day will help with the continued odor source.

I don't use any harsh chemicals in my pens for fear of disrupting my septic system.  I normally just wash down daily with water, but about once a month I have a regimen I follow for deep cleaning.  Get one of these from Harbor Freight:

Fill it about half full with liquid dawn soap that contains "Bleach Alternative" per the label.  Set the sprayer on full mix, and wet the kennels down real good with the soapy water.  Next, I take a stiff brush scrubber (looks kind of like a push broom) which I got at TSC and scrub down the pens.  Rinse well with water.

Next, clean out the sprayer canister and set it so it's barely mixing.  Fill the canister about a quarter full with this:

set the dial on "fan" and give the kennels a final rinse.  This stuff is VERY concentrated and a tiny bit goes a very long way.

I promise following this method you will have zero odor.  I kennel around 15 dogs at any given time and have been doing this for almost two years.

That odor stuff sounds similar to what we use. It should work real good it just costs a little more. That looks like a good hose sprayer. Let us know what you try and how it works.

The greyhound kennels sprinkle Tide on the floor of the kennels. Tide also helps to repel fleas. We were amazed that with literally hundreds of dogs on the place in a combination of concrete kennels and sand runs that there was absolutely no foul odor.

my mom has a house and business cleaning business and she uses some stuff called liquid alive its a cultured bacteria thats kills smell you can pour it down the septic system spray the kennels down amd even spray their houses down with it some real good stuff you will probably have to look at stores that carry commercial cleaning supplies....will notice the difference instantly it has a good smell and just doesnt mask the odor

I cleaned the pens today and filled up a pump sprayer with water and pinesol and can definitely tell a difference.  The pinsol soaks into the concrete and does not wash off like clorox.  Thanks for the help.

When it comes to making sh!+ and p!$$ smell good that is what we do. My dad was called into a building that had been a fish market and he made it smell good. If we can make a dumpster smell good anything is possible.

also, mayby try presure washer and then stain the concrete with concrete sealer to keep the pee from soaking in. sealer is not real expensive so it should not hurt to try. i know when cat pee gets on my bricks, it can still smell after it has dried. the stain/sealer will look good as well.jmo
