I have 2 catahoulas. 1 is 14 months and the other 6 months. Any differences due to the age difference? Also 2 6 month old pits. One I believe will make a great RCD. The other a lead in. Any differences on starting them? Or start them all by introducing them to a smaller hog and get the feel for which will be better at what? After introducing them....then what???

THere are several threads that are discussion on a dogs teeth don't set good and you can damage the dogs mouth by starting the cach dogs too early, and IMO 6 months is way too early.

The six month cat is too young IMO, some people start them early, I don't. I feel the dogs are not mentally stable & mature enough yet. However I would alllow the pup to run around the outside of the pen while working the older dog, and he can see and get excited if it wants too, but if it does not show any interest at that age it would not concern me, thee is plentyu of time for them to grow into it.

I show my CD pup's a pig when they are around 3 months old, and then after that, I dont let them catch anything until they are around 8 months, and thats to just make sure they have all there adult teeth in and set. but you can tell if your pup is going to want a hog or not by puting him on a leash and showing him hogs , or why your bay dogs are baying one in a pen have him on a leash and he should want to join in the game.   its just what I do to buy time while I am waiting on that time to pass.

On the bay dogs, the sooner the better!!!!  Keep it easy and fun, and make sure the pup always wins!  Always take the hog away with the dog wanting more.  Increase difficulty, i.e. bigger hogs/longer head start/etc. as the pups develope...  and most importantly... LOTS AND LOTS OF HOGS!!! Grin

I agree with Backwoods and use a similar method.  When the pups first teeth start to loosen, stop letting them catch pigs until 7 or 8 months.  While waiting, I introduce them to everything and everyone.  A catchdog that is hard to handle or requires too much attention will ruin a hunt.

Curs can take 10 months to 2 years to mature enough to find and bay hogs.  Exposure to hogs is the only way to know.  That's why a good one is worth so much money.

I am willing to listen to all suggestions and try everything it takes to get my dogs right or get the right dogs and get in the woods. Anything y'all have or think about for a rookie. Please let me know. I have ran dogs on hogs quite a few times. Just not me with my dogs. Can't wait. But I will til its the right time!

X2 I started my cat pup at 4 months in the woods and he's been huntin ever sence he's a year old now and finding bayin and catchin any thing under 150 but the sooner the better on baydogs but on my catchdogs I wait until about a year to catch but at about 5-6 months I introduce them to a hog meanin let him around the baypen and try to antagonize him until he's flippin out lol but tease the heck out of him and he'll catch guaranteed

x2, however if lots and lots of hogs not available it is ok as long as the dogs/pups are left with wanting more. Quality goes a long ways when training.
