Hey man,....I've hunted NM about 7 times over the years but never the Pecos. My advice would be to talk to the game biologist for that area and tell him this is your first elk hunt, he should be very willing to give you some help. Also, I would join the forum on Monstermuleys.com....go to the New Mexico thread and ask there, they should help you out also. You had better start some cardio and walk training...'cause your gonna need it. New Mexico is a beautiful state, but a lot of it is waaaaaay up or waaaay down. You're probably going to have a good hunt, the bulls should still be bugling some when you get there. Oh yea, did I mention that you need to start working your legs now....if not you won't enjoy your hunt nearly as much....get into shape and it'll be fun.

Bulls wont be bugling much that late in the season. I will be in Unit 34 of New Mexico on those same dates with a muzzleloader. Elk hunting is fun and yes, get in shape!!! Good luck!!!

Oh, and make sure you have GREAT binoculars and a spotting scope. Try to pattern the elk. Most people try to scout a few weeks in advance, but my advice is to go up 2-3 days before the hunt.

I dont know the area your going, but i hunted pagosa springs co. Just across nm line. The biggest thing I can tell you is the air is waaaaay thinner. Beautiful country. Lots of walking, looking, and listening.

Yes sir, thats it. Bought my hunting license at the chromo mercantile, if I remember correctly. We were Right next to Navajo peaks. I was actually working up there on Gary moris' ranch building a log cabin. It was Sept. So I took my bow with me. Gary actually took me out one evening to show me where to go. Ended up taking a good cow, but seen a few good bulls, 2 bear, a porcipine, and more mule deer than I could count. The bulls were sounding off good, early morning and evenings. I will never forget that sound. There was also some kind of weeds that had a very strong, distinctive odor. It was unlike anything I had ever seen, like being on a different planet.

You are so right Tom,...for us ole' redneck boys it's a different world out there. I love it though, I really enjoy that dry climate,....it's waaaaay too wet around Alabama for me. I know what you mean about the smelly weed, I think it's sagebrush.....it has a very distictive odor for sure. I really like NM, been over most of it and didn't see much I didn't like. There are a lot of square miles of it though that aren't fit for much but garsshoppers and lizards.

Thos square miles that dont appear to be fit for anything but grasshoppers and lizards hold some of the largest Mule Deer you will ever see, and some dang good Antelope.....Oh, and blue quail for the bird hunters
