Did some re-homing of some dogs today after an all day hunt with only one hog to show for it. Anyway, after doing so I got a call on my way home and a guy who I used to work with wants to bring me a Drahtaar back from Kerrville, Tx. this weekend. Apparently his brother got this dog and has trained it in blood tracking, but doesnt have time or the place to run it and the dog has been on a cat control mission in the neighborhood and needs to be placed in a home that will hunt her and with all the talk I have heard about bird dogs and how hard they hunt, at least the ones that I have seen, so I decided to give her a try. Hopefully she will bay and not point hogs, but either way if she finds them she can stay here and I plan on keeping yall updated.
I think their is some truth to the uglier a dog is the better it is at finding hogs!lol

Joey there was a guy that had one that was on the jagd hunters boards, he used the dog for small game and was a falconer.

What is the link for that board please? From what I understand she is good for clearing their ranch of varmits and small game, so I am sure she will get to know the tri-tronics system. That is if she does well in baypen and goes to the hogs in the woods then I will start breaking her of the other stuff. If she doesnt workout for me she will be heading to Colorado to do some Chukar hunting and bloodtrailing for my buddies up there. What impresses me the most about this breed is that you have to prove them as a hunting/ working dog before they can be registered. I hold onto the papers of my bulldogs until they have proven themselves in the woods/ Protection Field/ or Ranch. Usually have to show me some proof by 18mo. of age or no papers.
I wonder if we could ever convince NKC/AKC/ABA/ARF/etc. etc. to adopt this idealology? After all its supposed to be about the dogs anyway!lol

Joey, I am trying to remember what board that was on, I am thinking that one has closed down, but if I come across it I will post a link for you. I am interested in knowing how the dogs dispostion, and working aspect go. I was interested in this breed before but just too rare/expensive to give on a try just yet. My little experience working with the pure pointer on hogs was a very good one and the gyp was easy to trash break because she was inteelegent enough to know when we were looking for hogs. I remember one time she pointed a "covey of pigs" it was hilarious but never known her to do it again. Occasionaly she could not resist ground birds but only for a minute and she would go back to looking for hogs. |
