I noticed a few of yall use and really like bird dogs on hogs. My question is how well do they start on hogs as far a getting them to bay. I know they have really good nose to them and I'm sure they'll take a track if I can get they fired off on hogs. What is the best way to get them going that direction. Thanks

I like the bird dogs but have never started one mine was finished when I got him.., I do have a pup out of my last litter 6wks old that bays everything in sight so I don't think baying will b a problem but I'll figure it out as I go, prolly rely on the male to run him with as my main tactic. Good luck

My purebred Pointer would not bark for months, she finally got frustrated and started barking at squirrels and figured out the frustration is what it takes to get a TOTALLY SILENT dog to make some noise. If your dog is intrested in pigs then put them on the other side of fence and let her run around where it can't get to them to want to bay and then praise and rewatrd the behavior. If you dog is not intrested in pigs then you have a different problem, but sometimes can be fixed the same way, sometimes that dog just won't make a hog dog.

I breed and raise bird dogs and bird dog crosses.  I can usually get my crosses barking or catching by 10 weeks
old, but the pure bird dogs take a little more work, but by 16 weeks old they usually come around.

These are much older, 14 months vizsla X GSP, very energetic, good noses, great movers can cover alot of ground quick and easy. No interest in hogs yet but I haven't had them long I'll keep getting them around the baying to see if they fire off at all. May have made rookie mistake?Huh?? Might have to cross one with patterdale to get some fire out of them. LMAO

I got my gsp at 2 years old? he didnt do anything when i put him in the pen the first time so i put a older gyp in with him and within 30 seconds he was a chop mouth bayin fool. from then on i couldnt go past the pen with him without him baying from outside.. I did moch hunts with him several times and that was all it took. he is by no means a jamm up dog but if i could put him where the hogs are i know he can find them...I have only had him for about 3 months and with this dry weather I have only had him in the chase a few times.  i love my gsp so far.. he is built like a race horse and can run for days.
