This week I agreed to help out at VBS at my church. I believe in faith by service. I was paired up with a staff pastor and given a 5th grade class. So I thought I would share my week.

Monday, I got to meet the kids and two women showed up to help me. I made the lesson work despite all the problems the church had. I promised the kids some very annoying horns that would come in that day and would have them Tuesday. But I had brought my supersoaker and attacked the neighboring class when they came to pick on my kids. A few decorations got a little wet. I got blamed for kids and staff getting wet. Someone also mentioned footprints on the wall of another class from fleeing kids

Tuesday, The other class came with their own supersoakers but so did my class and we won. All water guns are now banned Grin That is all right I brought my fully automatic Nerf gun. But the horns were lost by UPS and the kids handled it all right. But Tuesday night I was not real happy and down right mad at a few people. I know I am rough around the edges. But I knew I had to stay for the kids. I realized I had not prayed so I prayed hard that night.

Wednesday, Things went much better and I thank God for helping me. I really liked the kids but they asked about the horns that I had ordered and I told them they were lost and we would have to have fun without them. I just kept trying to help everyone have fun. I had a great time using the bettle between the classes to show how we could do it with love and have fun. I also showed the other class how to show love while having fun shooting each other. I was so happy at the end of the day. As I left the church I got a call my special horns had been found.

Thursday, I gave out the annoying horns. The kids loved them and we went to each place blasting every one and yelling out cheers thanks to the little cheerleader and my female helper. I just shot people. They took my supersoaker away I am not sure how the darts got in the light fixtures. I know some of the prim and proper people think I am crazy. But the kids love me and we had a blast. The other classes have youth pastors or other pastors. They have all there fancy stuff. All I had was some fired up kids because I was crazy and shooting evyone that messed with my kids. Parents told me how much fun their kids had during the day. At the end today my class got the "Spirit Award." I took great pleasure in showing to all the snooties Grin

That is right. This dog running, crazy, hunting, and hog hunting guy showed the kids the Love of God. It just proves that God is for everyone. God loves us all and Jesus died for everyone. God can use all anyone to do His work. All we have to do is be willing and put forth the effort. I am rough. I am loud. I do rub people wrong. I am not a preacher. I am just a man. But I believe that God uses the worst people to show that it is God not us. All I did was show up and try to show God's love in the only way I can.

Glory be to God!

sounds like you had a good week. I work with kids and often piss off the other therapists and administration because of how I "mess around to much with the kids" but when it comes to building rapport with a patient and getting them to open up very few can do better but there are also those patients that dont like me.

Great job, Dub.

Reminds me of a quote my Mom used to tell me...

Good deal man, I love to hear of people who are "just regular guys" with no religious training doing what Jesus told us to do. We think a lot of times it is the preachers job to share the love of God but we have gotten the same orders that the preacher got. "Go tell all the World" and "They will know you by the love you have for each other" are God's words to all of us, not just those in full time ministry. I love showing kids that a Christian isn't a soft guy with a suit and tie that lets people walk all over them. It can be a crazy guy that runs through the woods in the dark chasing smelly animals with nothing but rope, a knife (optional), and some dogs. What matters is that we are trying to live our lives as much like Jesus as we possibly can. What we do for a few years on this earth will determine where we spend forever, and how wonderful or horrible it will be. Forever is a long time! Didn't mean to carry on so long, I just get fired up about this! I'm glad you got to be there for those kids, it doesn't sound like they will forget this week anytime soon!

Dub,
I have been doing something similar for one week every summer for the past 5 years.  Each year I am responsible for 8 boys for 6 nights and 7 days.  I know I have just as much if not more fun than they do; I am certain you had just as much fun as they did.

Good deal, Dub.
Those kids will remember that for the rest of their lives. Very good post.

Well Friday is over. Wow! I sure got a lot out of it. I am so blessed and tired. It was great to have parents come in and tell me their kids had so much fun. One of the girls asked if I had a son. I told her yes. She asked if the Nerf machine gun was his. I told her no it was mine. She told me that her dad would never have toys like that. It gave me a chance to tell her to be glad that she has a dad. There are so many homes today with no man example.I even helped the kids in a youth pastor's class. He was having a hard time with the out of control boys. They were a real hand full. I was that kid so I have no problem relating. So many of the staff grew up in sheltered homes. Now there is nothing wrong with that. But they can't understand the kid that comes from a less than desirable home. But even some of the pastors told me I did a good job. I just came as who I am with no goal except to serve the Lord with all that I am. I know some of the staff did not like my methods but I came to serve the Lord by making kids happy. I cleaned up most of my messes.

I would tell any of you guys going to church to offer your help to VBS. Even if you can't help all week there is so much prep work and behind the scenes stuff to do. Then some crazy guy (or girl) can come in shooting the kids with Supersoakers, Nerf machine guns, and giving all the kids very loud horns. (I am sure the parents were real happy about the horns the kids got Grin)

I feel so Blessed just thinking about the smiles. Now I am going to take a nap!
