Do you use anything to sedate the dog. Every time I try to stitch I can not get them to sit still so I end up stapling

Sutures on the deep cuts with staples on the outside. Sometimes I use Dermabond on skin cuts but reserve it mainly for the ears.

It depends on 1. How large is the cut = Very large cuts are stappled with a drain left at the bottom.
2. How deep is the cut = Deep muscular cuts, the muscle is sewn with dissolvable stitches and the skin is stapped with a drain left at the bottom.
3. The location of the cut = For small cuts, if the dog can lick it, we leave it alone. If the dog can't reach it, we will clean it and keep an antibiotic salve on it.

Regardless if you stitch em up or not. I would run some antibiotics thru them for couple days or more to keep the infection down.
