well guys, i didnt want to jack the cummins thread but i have been thru alot with algae in my diesel truck.
there is a micro organism that grows in diesel fuel, and all it takes is a small amount of water for them to reproduse in, and the waste from them is what causes the problem. it will stop up everything!!!,,

how you get it: right out of the pump at any fuel station, it is small enough it passes thru all filters.
how to git rid of it: keep water out of your fuel.  all types of products for this.  Lucas makes a product called Bio-Medic that is specificly for elimenating algae.

some of you might already know about this and please correct me if i have made any statements that are incorrect.
i spent about 2 months battling with this issue in my 2007.5.   after the dust settled i had spent over $7000 at Cummins.

IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING THAT BURNS DIESEL YOU BETTER BE TREATING IT.......

Also the Newer Cleaner Fuel has issues with Aluminum Aux. Tanks, something to do with the lubricant/detegent use to replace the sulfur. chemical corrotion with tanks built with a high % of recycled aluminum. pastey white build up turns to powder when the fuel is dried out of it..   In bed mounted tanks that are plumbed in to the main tank need to have a filter inbetween them.

Good info. We used to have our truck treated for algae when it was new at the dealership but we haven't done it in a long time. Can you buy Bio-medic at any auto parts store?

I throw Diesel 911 in a tank about every six months to get rid of any water that might be there. I also thro in some lucas fuel junk when I think about it. Now I may throw some Bio-Medic when I think about it.

Craig that is some good information there!  I have never heard of such but I think I will add some to my next tank and maybe some to the tractors as well since they sit quite a bit.  Prolly add some to the transfer tank too.  Thats an expensive little plant!

Just curious.....is this a relatively new problem?  I've never heard of it.  If so why is it now a problem, and wasntt 10, 15, 20 years ago.  Is it a difference in fuel aditives or a change in the motors them selves.  Or is it like an STD once your truck is infected you pass in on to ever fuel pump you stop at?

The new low sulphur fuel has increased the occurrence of the algae and the newer trucks are less tolerant as well, but it's all way been an issue in diesel fuel.

We got it in a 10,000 gallon above ground storage tank. When it had 8,000 gallon of fuel in it had to have all the fuel pump and strained. Then treated with algcide.

I've heard about it for years, but first ran into a problem with it a couple years ago on a little kubota tractor I had. Was a real pita for a bit. I ended up draining the entire tank, changing filters, and blowing out the tank and all lines.with compressed air.

What are the signs that it is the problem?

you beat me to it dub! i got an 06 cummins and during normal exceluration i get a hesitation for a split sec, not enough to loose power over, but enough i can feel and hear it and enough to get on my nerves. i change my filter every 5-10k miles when i change my oil, i ran the valves thinking that may be the problem, now im going to order a FASS fuel system to see if its low preassure from my tank pump. oh and i aint stock either, but it wasnt doing it till a lil over a yr ago and i had the upgrades on the tck over a yr before that.

my truck started running slugish thought the filter was bad, changed filter, ran about 30 min then died and would not start. had a wrecker take it to dodge cause it just had 40k on it they changed lift pump injecter tubes, still wouldnt run, then they droped the fuel tank and found "contaminated fuel"  and the warranty stopped right there..

i have been running diesel trucks since the 80's and this is the first problem i have had with fuel.

from what i have read it is from the low sulpher fuels.

a freind of mine has a son-in law he is a chemist that works for a oil company in Tulsa, he comfirmed that there are micro oranisms growing in diesel fuels.  they get transfered from tank to delivery truck right in to your truck.   they pass thru all filters, so you have to treat to kill them or make dang shure you treat for water because thats what they need to grow in...

check with the place you buy most of your diesel, ask them if they use any treatment in there tanks.. so do, but most dont....

Its been around a long time. Most of the people you buy your diesel from treat it ahead of time. Its the STD of the diesel world.
