What's the average distance ya'lls dogs go before getting the hog bayed? Has anyone noticed more hogs caught with fewer dogs versus a pack (more than 4 dogs)? I'm trying to get the most out of each hunt and dont know if "too many dogs" mess things up.

i prefer 2 or 3 solid dogs and a pup...i usually never run more than 4 at one time... distance for my dogs strickly depends on the hog... sometimes we luck up and one gets shut down fast and sometimes its a race... i think a lot of times if u start throwing more than 3 or 4 dogs on the ground the dogs start competeing with each other too much at the bay and it can break a bay... especially if the dogs aren't use to each other...

Feed them good hunt em hard. The best training can't make up for bad breeding.

Thats the info i was needing thank you. We sometimes run 3 dogs but then we also run 4 or 5, depending on how long its been since the last hunt. I used to coon hunt and we would run 4 to 6 dogs to cover more ground just didnt know if the same could hold true with hogs. again thanks for the input

Depends on the numbers of dogs and it they been raised and hunted together from birth as well, we used to run 1o to 15 curs in a pack all on the ground with mules, when we struck we caught about every hog in the pack eithe bayed up or if they broke bay and dogs got on singles, you had to crack a bullwhip and get the dogs to quit hunting or they go on and on, but when i was hunting like this we had hogs that would bay up and if let them settle down in aoak mott or brush u could slip up and pop one with a 22 ands back off some and wait, after 45 minutes used to be able to kill every hog in the pack, but its only on a big place with tons of hogs where u can alwaays ride to them on a mule that we could do this, not sure about trying it on the russians prob would never bay up and just run off like deer everywhere. We never kept a dog in a pack like this that would put a mouth on a hog either, ifit tryed to catch we get rid of it or they would all go to catching, but i am old man and gas was cheap, dog food was too and hogs tamer breeds and slowerlol It just depends on the land and hogs and how good of control u have on the dogs, it takes years to get a pack like this as well and u just about got to live on your own ranch to be able to get them broke out like that.
