Here's the deal:
I've got an older dog (about 8 years old) that is 100% hog dog. I have had her about 4 years and only hunted hogs with her, and the occasional skunk... Her previous owner hog hunted her, and would talk her into baying cattle occasionally, but she was not a cow dog, and you could tell she was hesitant thinking she would be reprimanded for it. She's being retired from hog dogging, and I would like to start her on cattle now. I don't really need a bonafide cow dog, just something that will take a track and locate/bay the occasional fence jumper. I've got access to some collie dogs that will eat up a cow, but they can't find one, and the pasture I am running in butts up to about 5000 acres of open woods and 3-4' tall pastures. I figure if I can get Lizzie locating the cows, then I can get the collies to honor her, and then I'm good to go.
So... How would you start Lizzie on cattle? Put her in a small pen with one or two and hiss her to them? Or am I better starting her with some wet cows that might have some more fight, to turn her on? I don't have access to any cow dogs in my area that actually bay. The one's around me are all silent collie types. So, I can't really put her in a pen with another dog and hope she joins in.
Your thoughts?

where u located? i got a supposed sure enuf cowdog that the previous owner said he used him to find rank wild cattle in colorado, utah and surrounding areas. i would like to see how good he is. i could bring him to u so we can see if he will work and loan him to u to get yours up and going.

I'm afraid she might find some big toothy barr in Plum Grave America when she's supposed to be baying cows.
If it comes to it, I'll go west and pick up a cowdog to work her with, but I'd really like to see if we can restart her at home with what we've got.

Good question, I have a dog that was nine kinds of heck breaking off cows. I really needed him the other day trying to pen some cows at the house. He helped a little bit, but like you said, thought he was going to get in trouble. Kinda frustrating when he is right there to help and won't do it.

Well then, I guess ill trade you a couple of floppy eared brindled coyotes for one ol washed up hog dog, you'll have the long range pups yodeling to the cows in no time. |

im kinda in the same boat with mine. i want him for hogs, but a lot of the places i hunt with a friend, there are a lot of cows, but i dont want him completely broke off cows. he didnt want to have crap to do with a hog and would hide behind me unless the hog charged and then would get inbetween the hog and me, but wouldnt do anything else till the other day when i put him out there with a couple other dogs at the pen and now he will bay through a pen, just dont know how he will do inside the pen or in the woods. chris ur welcome to try him if u like.

That might work. My place is 3/4 mile off of Sens road. Maybe 2 miles from Dupont plant as the crow flies.

Put her in a 1/2 acre pen with some heifers this evening. At first she wouldn't even look at them. Then I turned in my border collie to mix things up, once he got things rolling, she came to them. She worked them like a champ, but she stayed silent for a long time. One of them got after her, then she turned it on and started baying some. If one tried to leave the herd she would eat it up until it got right....
She's out of Doc Clampits cowdog stock, so the breeding is there, just neat to see it come out.
I will continue to work her and see of she will start them on her own.

Waylon, I'd like to open the gate on the whole place, but the 5k acres doesn't have any fences and is bordered by two major roads. If cward would give me some directions, I would just go drop them in the government woods. |

Waylon Waylon, I had 4 cows and 3 roping steers get out of one of the pastures last night. One of them was a braford that is always the first to the feed truck, so I figured I would just haul a buggy out there and cube them in. I took a couple pics to show you what I am up against. Between me having a couple stretches of bad fence, and the neighboring land having all the all you can eat grass buffet. I ended up putting all of them in the pens today, and it looks like I'll be stretching wire this weekend... This is the land adjacent to my pasture.  This is the pipeline that they drifted to. It's about 1/2 mile off my north fence.   |
