Monkey....gone but never forgotten! RIP

My dogs have a pretty good handle on them, as a general rule. Most anyone that has hunted with me will tell you that my dogs handle and are pretty much one person dogs. I like it that way.

Monkey runs loose 24/7 here at the house. I have some hogs in a pen and am trying to raise some blue hogs.....for research purposes of course... Smiley
The pigs are able to go in and out of the pen and its funny to me that Monkey completely ignores the pigs. He has done this for years and has never caught a pig . He doesn't even bark at the grown hogs in the pen...ever. He is smart enough to know whats going on. Now I have had a couple bigger hogs get out of the pen and then its game on. I came home one day and had an 80 lb or so gilt that had gotten out of the pen and Monkey had killed it dead as a hammer.......had holes all in its neck and throat. But if its under 30 lbs or so, he gives them a free pass. He won't hardly even mess with a small pig in the woods either. I have had him run over pigs to get to the sow.

The only other dog I have had that was that way was my old Dixie dog and she too was smart enough to figure out that the pigs belonged here. You could hand catch a baby pig and ride it in the dog box with her on the way home and she would never hurt it.

Its odd to me that probably the two best dogs I have owned at finding hogs were both this way about pigs. I hate a dog that runs around killing pigs while there are big hogs right there so maybe that's why......

Anyway here are a couple pics of 8 year old Monkey and 15 1/2 year old Dixie being harassed by the local gang..... Grin
Note the BLUE pigs!

I am up to five blue hogs here at the house...one good blue boar with about 2 1/2" teeth.... and 4 blue sows and gilts. If they breed true and produce blue offspring I may can set you up!!   Grin

I have the boar in with two sows now. I will put another young blue sow in with him in a month or so. Will see what colors I get.

These are 100% Florida wild hogs. They are only found in certain areas of Florida for some reason and the county I live in happens to have quite a few of them. They may wind up showing up in other parts of Florida one day...you can't ever tell!!  Grin

Course, if the price of feed and corn keeps going up my breeding project may get put on hold!

50 lb bag of corn was $11.49 today.

I love a smart dog, ours won't mess with them in a pen but if they get out...well, bless their little hearts lol

We have a few blue ones in our neck of the woods but not many so we try to turn them loose as much as possible...it would be neat to breed in some waddles to your blue hogs, you could make your corn money back pretty quick I would think.

That's a hoot,....them little pigs are fun to watch. As strange as it may be,....even though we have VERY few hogs right here where I live,....we do have some blue ones and several of them in regards to how few there are total. My dogs caught a good little boar hog last year that was pretty as a picture. He shook them off and took a swim.

This a pic of him after he swam the beaver pond....dogs are Belle, Hatchet and Abby.
