I've heard of people doing it on a deer lease or other area that people have been doggin on with no permission. Understand their thinking but that's a bit spitefull. Also, it happens uh... Naturally? A big hog can get his ears ripped off by dogs and still get away if the hunters don't get to the bay in time.

Ive heard stories of people barrin hogs and doin it to make em "dog killers" so that they would have a better chance at not gettin caught but I don't know how much truth is in it, i will say though that I've heard it more than once

Some people do it to thin the competition down. A no earred Barr or boar hog with shanks running out of his head can do some damage to a pack of dogs and put some people outta hunting completely. That's just the way some people operate.

I know a ranch hand we buy pigs off of that does is to piglets. Just to see if he traps them again when there older. All they do is trap. They wont let us run dogs or nothing so it dont really matter much

We call it a hog thief marking. Once the ear has been notched special for ID then a thief will cut the other side of the ear to change the mark leaving a small sliver of the ear that sometimes dies off. Or just someone being an A** hole and trying to get someone elses dogs hurt or killed. On that note my preference is if we see or catch the dogs just take em on a joy ride 2-3 miles down the road and put em back out. Everybody knows dogs love to go riding

Don't know about cutting the ears off and turning hogs loose, I think it's done to make 'em harder to catch. But I have heard of the ears being cut off to train a dog to catch on the jaw. I've seen videos of some of the old catch and throw competitions where a dog would catch on the jaw and not the ear. It seemed to be safer for the dog and it sure did stop a hog from turning and cutting a dog. The best one I saw was a little 40 lb bulldog that caught the hog under the chin. The hog was totally subdued.

I dont know what it was called but several months ago i saw a video and these guys caught the hog and instead of telling there catch dogs to back off or use a break stick they just cut the ears off and leashed the bulldogs up?

I think when the boars fight they also do it to each other. I don't like it but I might just run into it. That is why I know trappers and ask for any hog missing the ears. I want my dogs to catch one in the daylight before they run into that on the woods at night. I have no respect for someone that would cut the ears off to keep the poachers away. If someone wants to do that just let me know and I will go catch the poachers for them.

I don't understand it either Justified,.....but then I don't understand why anyone would develop a virus for computers and let it loose. I guess I just don't get being 'mean'.....but there are a lot of folks that do I reckon. Shame things have changed so much in modern times.....way back many, many years ago if somebody did such a thing or were just plain mean,......you just shot them,....plain and simple.....
