I just had a discussion about how much to feed a nursing dog. It was the first time I heard someone say they measure the food. I try to keep food in her bowl all the time. I think not only does it keep the dog with enough food but it gets the puppies on regular food easier. But I would like to know how much you feed a nursing dog?

I feed a quart can in the morning and a quart can in the evening. I worm the mom right after she's bred. Also about 25 days before pups are due I feed her a slice of raw pork liver.

As kevin and halfbreed said, ALL she wants. Keep the bowl full of feed n let her chow down when she wants.

What if you have a dog with high food drive that will literally eat till she pops? Do you free feed then?

I've got one like that. Had her on free feed while I went on vacation. I tested it out a few days before we left,  She was terrible the first couple days, looked like a basketball. But I just loaded the feeder up with twice as much feed as needed. When we got back she was fat but not excessively. In my experience I think it leveled off after a few days and she may have fed just a little more than the other dogs.

lol when you first put a dog on and automatic or free feeder they will in the beginning eat like there's no tommorrow , soon as they realize the food is allways there they will usually start consuming less than what you were feeding daily .

I guess that is why he measures. I let them eat too much and they learn.
