The little coyote pup being raised as a hog dog got me wondering. What's the most unconventional breed of dog you have seen being hog hunted?

Cheers

I don't really know of one, but my German Shepherd just had pups out of a ctathoula male dog that i may try one out as a hog dog! Not sure if it would be worth anything, but its worth a try!  Shocked Grin

I'd give one a whirl Wink Grin  Used to get tired of the looks and snide comments about my Ellie dog... now I just sit back and smile  Kiss

Years ago I met a hermit that lived right on the river bank of the Trinity river in the Harden area and he hunted anything that showed up in his camp. It was like a back woods dog rescue!
The dog he bragged on the most was one of the strangest looking canines I had ever seen. A German Shepard/bloodhound cross. Take a German Shepard, give him short hair like a bloodhound, with blood hound head and ears, a German shepards long haired tail, that distinctive shepard low rider hind end and you had his dog.
Even someone that new nothing about dogs could tell he was a shepard/blood hound cross and the combination of traits between the two breeds made this dog look goofy as hell. Cheesy
Must have been something to him for the guy had stinky boar skulls hanging all over the place.

I've seen a Chow that could find his own hogs.  And did so in front of some pretty good dogs.  He wasnt long range, but he didnt have to be.

One of the best dogs I've ever seen was a mixed up little raggamuffin terrier named "Bob". Couldn't have weighed more than 5 pounds, but he had more grit and more game finding hunt than 10 dogs.

Every pack has to have its comic relief.  This is Blue.  He's Bluetick/Blue heeler.  I know, that shouldn't work. I've heard it a hundred times.   Wink

The best part about him is that if ya leave the tailgate down, he discourages tailgaters.

I saw a  jack russel bay up a hog. It was kinda funny to watch a dog the size of the hogs lower leg baying up a boar.

My Whole pack! Grin I get alot of doubtful comments about my pack when I show up to the sign in stations but I always tell them to go ahead and I will give them the 30-45 minute head start and I will follow behind them up the mountain. I love hitting pigs that the hunters with the "good " dogs missed. It makes the hunt that much more better or when one of my dogs ends up joining in on one of their bays and helping out.

Are you guying talking about uncoventional "hog dogs" or unconventional dogs that catch hogs.  There is a difference, big difference.

Maybe the best dog I have ever hunted behind was as German shepard named "Leggs."   Picked up from the hound, bayed in a pen a couple of times, taken to the woods and was a natural.

I have never seen a hound take a track that he could not run.  Many a morning in July in South Carolina we would put out in a chufas field that A hog had hit the night before and he would leave on a walk and end up putting pork at the end.

A one in a lifetime dog.  Not my dog, but only hope I own one as good during my lifetime.   Smart as they come.

Never got to hunt with Leggs but have heard plenty about him and have seen a few pictures.

Have you ever hunted with Mr. Bobby and the wolf pack?

THey've got a gentleman her in LA that uses German Shepards with much sucess (He says there his secret wepon). So to the poster with the GS cross I'd say give it a try.

Most unconventional dog I've seen was a Golden Retriever, he'd find and stop his own hogs.
