Well....im NOT gonna get into that can of worns anymore.....my opinion on help dogs is probably well known.
To answer your question......there were help dogs in their yard as well as strike dogs. We would hunt pups on occasion just like anyone else who already has a full team of experienced dogs. But most of the time the pack would consist of a couple strike dogs and a couple "help dogs".
I was talking about their dogs, not yours... And as far as help dogs, I was referring to say a 3 year old dog, not a pup... You seem to have a lot of knowledge about how the bay pen dogs work... I'm curious as to how they correlate with woods dogs... I've seen good woods dogs that would climb out of the pen and others that were straight catch in a pen, but bay in the woods... I've also seen ALOT of pups that started baying early turn out not even close to the caliber of woods dogs that pups that would rather run around and explore and not bay a hog...

They had "help dogs" (my definition) that were not pups. Man...I'm usually better at expressing myself. I'm not talking about taking a 2-3 year old dog and trying to cross it from woods to pen or vice versa...I've NEVER seen that work. Not saying it can't...just saying I've never seen it. As far as the correlation....I'm talking about making your choice...at an early age. Again...these dogs were very well blooded...any given litter was capable of producing a quality pen dog or quality woods dog. When a litter was born all the pups were started in the pen. The ones that MAY have the knack to make it as a competition dog were continually worked in the pen. The others were trained/used as woods dogs. To take it a step further...not all the pups that were sent in either direction turned out. I'm not trying to make these dogs sound like super dogs...they weren't...they were just good blooded...but there were culls...just like any where else.

I clearly hear the Q & A on pen/wood dogs. It's lookin like whoever owns the dog has a choice WHERE to invest "quality" time(pen or woods)....that's a good thing. Since this male pup is(in my hopes) gonna b striking hogs, here within 6 months, on his own, high high hopes, I would think that's a success. I don't really want to have a help dog, for no specific reason either. I just think if I can maintain 2 strike dogs and a smart CD, that's all I really need. Gettin there is a lot harder than it sounds. I'm gonna say when Machito is 1 1/2, if he turns out to be findin hogs, I will get into another pup and start over. For the record, my whole reason of askin the pen dog ? Was to see advantages/disadvantages of training a pup once a week for 10 min or less, up to a year old. I have figured it will turn out a good pen bay dog, not a good woods strike dog(which is really what my goal is). Y'all all do a great job at explainin your view, and honestly I had no idea this subject could get so deep- so thanks for the feedback!!

Just keep feeding him hog tracks in the woods and he'll figure it out.

You just have to let the dog know and understand what you want him/her to do! simple as that!
